Coffee County, Alabama was established on December 24, 1841 from the western section of Dale County. The original courthouse in Elba was destroyed by fire in 1851. It was rebuilt and later destroyed again by fire in 1863 by a band of Confederate deserters known as "Ward's Raiders." Coffee County has two courthouses located in Elba and Enterprise. This book contains 9,169 marriage records. Elba consists of 6,831 records from 1877 to 1930. Enterprise consists of 2,339 records from 1907 to 1933. This book was written to assist individuals in their genealogical research on individuals married in Coffee County, Alabama during the above periods. Due to floods on March 14, 1929 and March 17, 1990 some records from Elba were unreadable. The floods severely damaged Elba books 9A and 10A. Due to poor handwriting and flood damage on the original marriage licenses, some of them were hard to transcribe. Dale County, Alabama became a county in December 1824. It was organized from parts of Covington and Henry County. Dale County is named in honor of Samuel Dale. The early records for Dale County have been destroyed or damaged by fire. The original courthouse was located in Daleville, Alabama. After the creation of Coffee county in 1841, the courthouse was moved to Newton, Alabama. After the relocation to Newton, the courthouse was completely destroyed by fire on March 22, 1869. All county records from December 1824 to March 1869 were completely destroyed. The third courthouse was built in Ozark, Alabama during 1870. It was destroyed by fire in November 1884. The county records from March 1869 to November 1884 were damaged by fire and water. These records are currently unavailable to the public. The current courthouse is located in Ozark, Alabama. This book contains 7,080 marriage records from November 1884 (after the fire) to 1930. Since the 1884 records are incomplete, the book title only covers the complete years of 1885 to 1930. This book was written to assist individuals in their genealogical research on individuals married in Dale County, Alabama between November 1884 to 1930. Geneva County was established on December 26, 1868 from parts of Dale, Henry, and Coffee County. This locality was settled during 1836 by Henry A. Youge. Henry was the first postmaster in the area and he named the county in honor of Geneva Switzerland. A fire destroyed all county records from December 1868 to late 1898. This book contains 6,295 marriage records from late 1898 to 1930. There is also one license from 1887 and one from 1897 included in the total. These two licenses were apparently resubmitted after the fire. This book contains 11,313 marriage records from February 25, 1903 to August 2, 1936. It contains all marriage records from Book 1 through Book 11.
